Reading Access news
Di Goodlock
For the last three Access forum meetings I have battled (often in vain) to keep the town accessible. Taxi bays seem to be more important these days than disabled parking bays. Reading buses are supposed to be wheelchair friendly, yet those who have tried to use the new bio ethanol buses have experienced great problems which Reading Buses has not addressed. However, on a positive note, here are a few of the things we have achieved:
- A refurbishment of the zebra crossing in Erleigh Rd. It is unusable if you are in a wheelchair or scooter and pretty difficult if you use walking aids.
- New pelican crossing in Duke St to cross to the Oracle. The road is to be narrowed here and no crossing was planned as a replacement to the old one.
- Reinstatement of the pavement and footpath sub group which had folded five years ago. This group will have a say in where dropped kerbs (for crossing the road, not to enable you to drive a car onto your property) are needed and its own budget for provision of them. I have opted to go on this group, so let me know if one is needed near you.
Do you have problems with vehicles parking in the bus lay-bys? If so, please let me know as we have had some success in the Wokingham Road by working with the Community Support Officers to ensure that offenders are issued with tickets!
